[Informal Review] Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus
*review taken from my account on Goodreads*
Okay. I will review about it. Out of 5, 4? No. 3 stars. Blood of Olympus was a fantastic book! Really. Though somehow, I feel like there's something lacking about it. Perhaps it is partly my fault, for setting my expectations high about it because, come on, it's the last book of a very awesome series and there's just a lot going on that you can't help but think. Somehow, I think that this book is rushed. And if we've noticed, it's quite shorter than the previous books. The battles with the giants was too fast, I guess. Same goes with the battle between the two camps. The story covered more on their journey to the real battle than the real battle itself. Because I think, and I expected, that the battles would be harsh and sad and long but victorious, like in The Last Olympian, but it turned out like, "it's done?" I don't know how I'm going to review this without spoiling a bit, but I'm going to say what I want to say about the outcomes that have happened in the characters: Percy: I was surprised that Percy didn't have a POV in this book. I was quite disappointed at that, also. But as I leafed through the pages, I realized what Rick wanted to point out. He wanted to give light to other characters, to focus on them, and it has worked out well. Really well. Somehow, I just felt weird because it feels like he and Annabeth has been sidetracked on this book. Annabeth: Perhaps the same as Percy. Doesn't have a POV, and didn't have to do much in the book either. I wanted Percabeth. Yes, of course, there are Percabeth in this book. But I wanted a reunion as well. I really really wanted to have a Percy/Annabeth/Grover reunion in the end. Have a talk like old times you know. But no, there never was an interaction of the trio in the entire book. And I was broken at that. I felt sad. Because I wanted to relive the friendship they have shared, the first kind of friendship we've come across in the entire story, and see it back in the end. Even for just a while, a scene where they are all very happy and hugging each other, the three of them. That would've been marvelous, and that would've soothed my heart a little. Piper: Wow. Piper. Piper has developed a lot in this book. This is her golden moment. For the past few books, I always thought Piper as just a simple person, who is more known with her relationship than Jason than what she actually does for the quest. Yes, that's me. I never thought much of Piper, but this book has turned that around. It's nice though, to see how they handled their relationship at the end (with Jason). Though I'm still not a very big fan of them. Jason: Jason is so-so for me. Though I believe I liked him in this book. He is aware of his situation, about the whole "being hit in the head and unconscious" thing, which is funny for me. I've come to see a little bit more of his relationship with Piper. Another thing is, I'm disappointed because Jason never even talked to Reyna. Never did he say anything to her. Who did the talking to Reyna though, was Piper. That's fine. It hints the "we're cool, okay?" kind of thing. But absolutely, there should've been any part where Jason was talking to her, for old times sake, right? Even a little bit. No? :( Hazel: Hazel is continuing to be awesome in this book. I found it sweet what he did for Leo. Sweeter than she usually is, and I liked that about her. She had learned to control more of the mist, and she's got a happy life. Nothing much to say about her, I guess. Frank: Frank, the new praetor, yes. I find it cool that he was safe and all. Actually, at first, out of all the seven, I have the chills he was going to die. What with all his tiny piece of wood. Yes, I know, I know, it's hidden away and safe. But in the previous books, it was an object of danger for Frank, and it seemed like it would play a bigger role later. However, it seemed that became a bit anticlimactic, because the piece of wood seemed to be forgotten in the story. Only mentioned at the end. I'm not disappointed, though, because I like Frank. Leo: GODS! Leo. I don't know. I feel sad and happy at the same time. Mostly sad. I agree with P*iper on that one though. If he was there, I'd kill him. Not literally kill him though. It was a very Leo act. Surprising his friends with that one, well... I was hurt as well. I knew that was coming, but still. He's become open with Calypso and all. And spoiler here:(I hate that the goodbye was so sudden!) I'm stupid for demanding a lot of things, but one of those things is actually Leo and Piper recovering the memories that were altered from the first book. Really, I wanted that to happen. Everything else seemed to be resolved, yet I feel like that is still a problem. Actually, it's not a problem anymore, if you think about it. They can live just live fine either way. But to me, as a reader, i feel like this is important. Nico: Well, the Nico POVs were working. They were good, and it's nice to see a new name as title headers. It was wonderful to believe that the entire story wasn't just about the seven. Because honestly, Nico did a lot of things. And I mean A LOT. He had fully shown himself in this book. He'd become open, and I loved that I saw how he dealt with people other than Percy and Hazel. We'll all know how dangerous it would be to enrage Nico. His relationships with the public has improved. And yes, the whole Nico/Will thing. I'm not against that kind of relationship. I just think it wasn't necessary. I mean Nico sure has been hurting a lot, but it seemed so sudden with the whole Will thing. It's like it was just written down by Rick to give him a sort of sorry-for-making-your-whole-life-miserable gift. Reyna: The Reyna POV is just, thank you Rick, for giving her one. If I liked Reyna before. I like her a lot more on this one. We can see the thoughts of Reyna now, and I find it wonderful that underneath all those purple toga and brave face, she was running away with some things, like normal people. I find it wonderful how she deals with Nico. She.Is.Fantastic. She's like the older sister Nico lost. How she understands Nico was marvelous. Honestly, I did not expect that the trio (Reyna, Nico, and Coach Hedge) would turn out to be like that. I was thinking a not-very-much-talk-with-each-other-except-coach-being-noisy thing, but I was wrong. And I felt sad for Reyna, sure, she might have gotten over Jason and Percy, but see, this is where I think the Will/Nico thing ain't that necessary. If Rick were to give everyone partners in the end. Even Leo. Well, Reyna shouldn't be left out, right? I'm just sad that it was only Piper who talked her through about her feelings in the end, and no alone time with Jason, even for just five seconds, since Jason would be spending more of his time in Camp Half-Blood then, than in Camp Jupiter. Overall, Blood of Olympus was wonderful. It's still marvelous how Rick managed to weave all that in a single work. Perhaps there was just too many elements that a few of them has been ignored or simply cannot be inserted back.
